“This operation can only be performed when you are connected to the network”
Is there anyway to avoid this message when dealing with offline files? The message appears when offline and attempting to move or delete a folder (individual files are not a problem).

Hi, Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet Forum. In Windows Vista, when the offline files are ghost items, you may be unable to delete the cache of offline files. For more information, please refer to the following website. You may be unable to delete the cache of offline files from the client-side caching (CSC) cache on an offline Windows Vista-based client computer http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938092 Meanwhile, I would like to share some articles about offline files with you. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2007.11.offline.aspx http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/93a550df-34cd-4497-85d0-8732602f59591033.mspx Hope this helps. Thanks.

Thank you for the response Dale. Unfortunately the issue is not if the folder is available offline. I have utilized Group Policy to make the directory containing the folder 'test1' shown in my image above and all its subfolders/files available automatically offline. I have no problem opening this or other folders and files within the offline cache. I also have no problem moving files or deleting files within the cache when offline. As stated I can not delete or move a folder when offline. Now technically a move does partially work...this might seem confusing. When moving a folder with files to another folder with in the cache (in the offline state) does make a new folder in the location specified and the files do move as desired, but for every file with in the folder plus the folder itself a error screen as depepicted above is displayed making you believe the move was not completed. Thus if you were to move a folder with 3 files you would see the error screen 4 times. Once all the error screens have been cleared you are left with the 'moved' folder still in its original location without any files inside it, and the moved folder in its new moved to location with the files inside it.

Hi, Thanks for your update. Based on my research, I suggest you installing the following Hotfix which contains a design change to the Offline Folders in Windows Vista. This could change the behavior while deleting and moving offline folders. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942845Hope this helps. Thanks.

Did you ever get a fix for this problem? I'm currently deploying folder redirection, and experiencing the same problem. All my clients are running Vista SP2. So those hotfixes will not work.Basically once I turn on folder redirection it doesen't matter whether or not the folder is made available offline I simply cannot delete any folders that are in redirected locations. If I turn off Offline files functionality via Group Policy the redirection works and I can delete folders with no problem. Again it's only folders, I can delete single files without a problem.I need this functionality as I have laptop userswho are remotely connected and will be confused when they login with their laptops and are unable to save to their desktops or my documents folder. Is there anything I can do to fix this issue. It seems odd that not too many people have reported it.

aperture01 I have the exact same problem. Redirected folders that are made offline I cannot delete random folders. I can delete files fine. I am also running vista service pack 2.Clint Boessen MCSE, MCITP: Messaging Perth, Western Australia Blog: http://clintboessen.blogspot.com/

I get this as well. Offline folders always cause me grief, and I keep putting off implenting an alternative. In this instance, the user has attempted to cut and paste the folder to another folder within the my documents (redirected onto a server share) and gets that error. He said he was able to copy and paste fine, but could not delete the folder afterwards. All this is while connected to the network and fully synchronised.

I just observed this problem on my laptop and as I usually do before doeing anything special about a problem - researched and landed on this page. Anyway, these statements here got me on the track of "offline" folders. In my case I had had a folder "A" on my desktop that would not delete. Now knowing this could be about offline folders I went to the servers file system for redirected user folders and deleted the "A" folder, i.e. \\myserver\shares\users\myuser\desktop\A. When I looked at the local user desktop on my laptop the folder had now been deleted thus problem solved. I am just guessing that the problem may have come around for some folders when I some time ago relocated the physical location of the redirected folders to another file server. I.e. the offline cache control in the client for some reason may have a problem collaboration if the offline files are moved even though the location of the files were indirected using DFS as in my case (so the problem should not have been there?) But I only noticed the problem some time after when I started cleaning up my desktop - as I do from time to time.

I believe this is being caused when you have offline file folders enabled. I've noticed that when I try to create and then delete a folder in an area enabled as such, I get this message. After forcing a sync all from the Microsoft sync feature, I was able to delete the problem folder.

try going to the sync center in control panel and increase the amount of space available for offline files
